TGIM 12-12-11

It was early Sunday evening, home, and all I was trying to do was lift one end of the couch to gauge its weight, wondering if I could help move it to another room. I got the end lifted up without much struggle, paused a second in triumph, and there it was-darting up the couch leg in all its bug-eyed green glory.

You’d think it was a much bigger lizard by the scream I let loose, plus a few curse words I didn’t know I knew. Earl came barreling out of the den looking steeled for a gory scene. “What?!?” he yelled. “Lizard!!!” I yelled back. In a minute we were both laughing at my panic over a 3 inch long half-ounce lizard. “I don’t want to kill the poor thing, can you catch it and relocate it to the patio, I asked?”

The chase was on. Have you ever chased a lizard around an open living-dining-kitchen floor plan? Did I mention we have polished concrete floors? Those critters are FAST! We’d already been on a hike that day, but Earl got a bonus workout zooming around after the thing. I couldn’t tell for sure but I think they were both sweating when finally, held by the tip of its tail, the lizard was relocated to the hillside our house sits on. No doubt ecstatic to be rid of us.

The lizard episode was a simple case of wrong place, wrong time. It wasn’t a malevolent lizard and I had nothing against it. It just hadn’t earned the right to be in my living room. And that’s our “lizard lesson”:

Make sure everything you say “yes” to has earned the right to be there, the right to your time and energy. If you’re not vigilant, work tasks, committee memberships, people, places, pounds, relationships, even lizards are in your life and you don’t recall having said “yes”.

But how to decide, what’s your criteria? VISION, whatever business or personal vision is most important to you right then. At every decision point, ask yourself “Does this serve my vision?” Yes or No – no qualifiers allowed. You always have a choice. Make it a more conscious one based on your best vision. TGIM: Thank God It’s Monday! Stay strong.
